GRP Fire-Retardant Roof Canopies for
Tensile Fabric Structures in the UAE

Tensile fabric structures require lightweight roof components that can deliver reliable performance under extreme environmental and fire safety conditions. In regions such as the UAE, roof-level architectural elements are continuously exposed to high temperatures, sand winds, and prolonged outdoor weathering. For such applications, material durability, fire-retardant properties, and dimensional stability are critical to ensure long-term safety, performance, and structural integrity.

This case study outlines the successful manufacturing and supply of custom GRP fire-retardant roof canopies with integrated louvers for tensile fabric structures installed at various Sheikh Palace locations in the UAE. The project demonstrates the suitability of GRP roof components for high-profile architectural applications in harsh climates.

Project details:

The project required the supply of lightweight, fire-retardant GRP roof components suitable for elevated central roof areas within tensile fabric shade structures, where access is limited and long-term reliability is essential.

Product and Application

Custom GRP roof canopies were manufactured for use as central roof covers in tensile fabric shade structures. These roof canopies are installed at the junction of steel poles and tensile fabric membranes, a critical connection point that requires effective protection against rainwater ingress and leakage.

The application involves continuous exposure to outdoor environmental conditions, including sand-laden winds, high ambient temperatures, and direct sunlight. Integrated louvers were incorporated into the GRP canopy design to provide controlled natural ventilation while maintaining effective weather protection and structural stability.

Key Performance Requirements

Customization and Manufacturing

All GRP fire-retardant roof canopies were custom-fabricated to meet project-specific design and dimensional requirements. GRP was selected over conventional materials such as steel or GI due to its significantly lower weight, corrosion resistance, and suitability for forming long spans and complex curved profiles.

Manufacturing involved controlled GRP lay-up techniques, precision shaping to maintain structural curvature, and careful assembly of the integrated louver systems. High-quality gelcoat finishes were applied during production to ensure long-term surface durability, UV resistance, and consistent appearance in exposed roof-level installations.

Challenges and Solutions

The main challenges involved designing louver systems capable of withstanding sand wind loads and fabricating long GRP canopy sections while minimizing deflection and maintaining structural rigidity.

These challenges were addressed through optimized curvature design to improve stiffness, enhanced louver geometry to reduce wind impact, and controlled fabrication processes to balance strength and weight. Continuous quality inspections and dimensional checks ensured consistency and reliability across all manufactured components.

Results and Conclusion

The project was successfully completed within the planned two-month timeframe. All GRP fire-retardant roof canopies met the specified fire safety, structural performance, and dimensional accuracy requirements and were seamlessly integrated with the tensile fabric structures by the main contractors.

This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of custom GRP fire-retardant roof canopies as a durable, lightweight, and reliable solution for tensile fabric structures operating in demanding environmental conditions such as those found in the UAE.
