GRP Column Cladding for Interior Architectural
Applications in Malls and Public Buildings

Exposed steel and concrete columns are often unavoidable in modern commercial buildings, yet they can negatively impact the overall interior appearance if left untreated. In shopping malls, leisure centers, and public buildings, architectural finishes must combine aesthetics, safety, and practicality. Column cladding solutions must therefore be lightweight, fire-retardant, cost-effective, and visually appealing.

This case study outlines the successful manufacturing and supply of custom GRP column cladding for multiple interior architectural projects across the UAE and Muscat, including several installations for Fabyland Leisure Amusement facilities.

Project Overview

Project details:

The project required fire-retardant architectural cladding solutions suitable for interior public spaces with high footfall and strict safety requirements.

Product and Application

GRP column cladding was manufactured to enclose existing steel I-beam columns and, in some cases, concrete square columns. These claddings improve the visual appearance of structural elements while maintaining access and structural integrity.

The cladding systems were primarily used in interior areas such as shopping malls, amusement centers, showrooms, and retail spaces. Different design patterns were required to match the specific business themes and interior concepts, while also allowing effective light distribution and a clean architectural finish.

Compared to steel or concrete cladding, GRP column cladding offers a more economical solution with significantly lower weight load on the building structure. It also enables faster fabrication and smoother finishes, making it ideal for commercial interior applications.

Key Performance Requirements

Customization and Manufacturing

All GRP column claddings were custom-fabricated based on architectural drawings and client design concepts. Each project required unique shapes, patterns, and surface finishes to align with the intended business theme and interior layout.

Manufacturing involved developing custom moulds to achieve the desired geometry and aesthetic detail. Special attention was given to shaping half-rounded segments and ensuring precise hairline joints for a seamless appearance. Fire-retardant GRP materials were used throughout to meet safety requirements while maintaining consistent quality and finish.

Challenges and Solutions

The primary challenges involved translating the architect’s design vision into physical GRP components while maintaining strict fire-retardant compliance and high visual standards. Achieving smooth, glossy finishes and aligning multiple cladding segments with minimal joint visibility required precise mould design and careful fabrication.

These challenges were addressed through detailed pattern development, accurate mould fabrication, and controlled production processes. The use of GRP allowed greater flexibility in shaping and finishing, ensuring both safety compliance and strong visual impact in customer-facing environments.

Results and Conclusion

The projects were successfully completed within the planned two to three-month timelines. All GRP column claddings met the required fire safety, dimensional accuracy, and aesthetic standards and were delivered for installation by the client’s site teams after painting works.

This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of custom GRP column cladding as a safe, lightweight, and visually attractive solution for interior architectural applications in malls, leisure facilities, and public buildings.
