GRP Instrument Canopies for Outdoor Instrument
Protection in UAE Refineries

Outdoor field instruments used in refineries and industrial plants require effective protection from direct sunlight to maintain accuracy, reliability, and service life. In the UAE, extreme ambient temperatures and continuous solar exposure can negatively impact instrument performance and increase maintenance requirements. Properly designed sunshade systems are therefore essential, especially in hazardous and fire-sensitive industrial environments.

This case study outlines the successful manufacturing and supply of custom GRP instrument canopies used as sunshades for field instruments across multiple refineries and industrial facilities in the UAE, including projects executed for Petrofac and ADNOC.

Project Overview

Project details:

The project required fire-retardant GRP instrument canopies suitable for continuous outdoor installation in refinery and industrial environments with strict safety standards.

Product and Application

GRP instrument canopies were manufactured for use as sunshades to protect outdoor field instruments such as transmitters, gauges, and reading meters from direct sunlight. These canopies help reduce heat exposure, improve reading accuracy, and extend the operational life of sensitive instrumentation.

The canopies were fabricated using fire-retardant GRP material, Class 02 grade, making them suitable for use in refineries, petrochemical plants, and other industrial facilities where fire safety compliance is mandatory. The application involves long-term exposure to sunlight, high temperatures, and outdoor environmental conditions.

Key Performance Requirements

Customization and Manufacturing

All GRP instrument canopies were custom-fabricated to meet specific plant layouts, instrument configurations, and meter sizes. Design and fabrication were carried out as per approved drawings and client specifications to ensure full coverage and proper alignment of each instrument.

Manufacturing involved optimized moulding, shaping, and curing processes using fire-retardant GRP materials. These controlled production methods ensured consistent quality, surface finish, and dimensional accuracy across multiple canopy sizes while meeting fast-track project schedules.

Challenges and Solutions

The main challenges included handling multiple size requirements and executing large-quantity orders within tight delivery timelines typical of refinery and industrial projects.

These challenges were addressed through efficient production planning, standardized moulding techniques, and controlled curing processes. This approach enabled mass production of GRP instrument canopies while maintaining uniform quality and compliance with fire-retardant specifications.

Results and Conclusion

The project was successfully completed within the planned one to two-month timeframe. All GRP instrument canopies met the required fire safety, dimensional, and performance specifications and were delivered for installation by the client’s site teams without any issues.

This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of custom GRP instrument canopies as a durable, fire-safe, and low-maintenance solution for protecting outdoor field instruments in refinery and industrial environments across the UAE.
