Jim Buoy GRP Hard Case for
Marine and Offshore Applications

Bright orange GRP barrier units for construction site safety and storage

Marine and offshore environments demand protective enclosures that can withstand constant exposure to saltwater, UV radiation, wind impact, and vibration. Life-saving equipment such as lifebuoys must remain protected, accessible, and fully functional under harsh environmental conditions.

This case study outlines the successful manufacturing and supply of custom Jim Buoy GRP Hard Cases for Dubai Petroleum and several marine projects across the UAE.

Project details:

The requirement was to provide durable GRP enclosures designed to protect lifebuoys installed on ships, offshore platforms, and marine facilities.

Product and Application

The Jim Buoy GRP Hard Case (GRP type) is primarily used in marine and offshore applications to protect life-saving equipment from weather exposure, corrosion, and physical damage. These hard cases were supplied for installation on cargo ships, oil tankers, passenger boats and vessels, fishing boats, oil and gas platforms, and offshore rigs. Each unit was designed with a rectangular body and oval ends and fitted with a hinged lid to ensure quick and easy access during emergency situations.

Key Performance Requirements

Customization and Manufacturing

All GRP hard cases were custom-fabricated as per drawings issued by the marine department, based on client requirements and approved designs.

GRP was selected over conventional materials due to its corrosion resistance, lightweight structure, and long-term durability in saltwater environments.

Manufacturing involved controlled GRP lay-up processes, structural reinforcement planning to balance strength and weight, and precision mould preparation to achieve a smooth internal finish.

The rectangular body with curved oval ends was carefully designed to improve wind resistance and reduce sharp edges. A UV-stabilized gelcoat finish was applied during production to ensure surface durability and protection against sun degradation.

Mounting provisions were incorporated for wall mounting brackets and pole mounting on safety posts.

Challenges and Solutions

The main challenges involved maintaining lightweight construction while ensuring high structural strength, providing adequate reinforcement for offshore exposure, and achieving a smooth internal mould finish to protect lifebuoys.

These challenges were addressed through optimized reinforcement design, controlled mould fabrication techniques, and curved oval-end geometry to reduce wind impact. The UV-stabilized gelcoat system enhanced long-term resistance against sun exposure and harsh weather conditions.

Continuous quality inspections ensured dimensional consistency and structural reliability across all supplied units.

Results and Conclusion

The project was successfully completed within the planned 45 to 50-day timeframe. All Jim Buoy GRP Hard Cases met the specified structural, durability, and weather-resistance requirements for marine and offshore applications.

The enclosures provided reliable protection for lifebuoys against corrosion, UV exposure, wind impact, and physical damage in demanding marine environments.

This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of custom Jim Buoy GRP Hard Cases as a durable, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant solution for marine and offshore safety applications.
