GRP Sunshades & Canopies for Instruments in Offshore, Oil & Gas, and Industrial Applications
Table of Contents
ToggleIn the offshore, oil & gas, petrochemical, and industrial sectors, instruments, gauges, meters, and other monitoring equipment are continuously exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Protecting these instruments from direct sunlight, high temperatures, sand, dust, rain, and strong winds is essential for maintaining reliable operation, visibility, and long service life.
At Matrix Fiberglass Industries LLC, we manufacture custom made GRP weatherproof sunshades and canopies specifically for instrumentation and equipment protection in demanding industrial environments.
Why Are Instrument Sunshades Required?
Many instruments and recordable meters installed in oil & gas and industrial facilities are located outdoors. These instruments need to remain easily accessible and readable while being protected from severe weather conditions.
A properly designed instrument canopy provides protection from:
- Direct sunlight
- High ambient temperatures
- Rain and moisture
- Sandstorms
- Dust accumulation on instrument displays
The canopy is designed similar to a protective “cap” and installed above the instrument. It is generally mounted using the existing pipe, support post, or structural arrangement available at the installation location.
Custom-Made GRP Canopies
Instrument sunshades are generally not standard-size products. Their dimensions and configuration depend on several factors, including:
- Instrument size and configuration
- Number of instruments installed in a row
- Available installation space
- Pipe or support-post arrangement
- Instrument visibility and accessibility
This customized approach allows the canopy to provide effective protection without unnecessarily obstructing access, ventilation, or instrument visibility.
Why GRP Is Preferred for Instrument Canopies
GRP is an excellent material for outdoor instrument sunshades, particularly in the UAE and GCC regions, where high temperatures, intense sunlight, sand, and dust are common.
The GRP canopies manufactured by Matrix Fiberglass Industries LLC can be produced using fire-retardant GRP materials, with the required fire-retardant classification generally specified as FR Class 2.
Protection Against Sandstorms and Dust
One of the important advantages of a properly designed GRP instrument canopy in the GCC region is protection against sandstorms and wind-driven dust.
The canopy provides an additional protective barrier while maintaining sufficient ventilation and allowing the instrument to remain easily readable and accessible.
Typical GRP Canopy Thickness
Depending on the overall size, design, support arrangement, and project requirements, GRP instrument canopies are typically manufactured with a thickness ranging from approximately 3 mm to 5 mm.
Grey shades are widely used for these applications. However, GRP canopies can also be manufactured in other colours or according to the required RAL colour specification.
Mounting and Installation
GRP instrument canopies are generally installed by the main contractor using U-clamps or suitable mechanical fasteners. These clamps securely attach the canopy to the existing pipe or support post associated with the instrument.
Depending on the canopy size and installation arrangement, mounting plates or reinforcement plates can also be incorporated in the clamping area using SS or GI materials.
The mounting arrangement improves the overall stability of the canopy and provides additional resistance against wind forces.
Reinforced Edges and Flanges
The free edges of the canopy can be designed with inward-facing flanges. These flanges act as reinforcing features, increasing the rigidity of the GRP panel and reducing excessive deflection under wind loading.
